How to Pick the Right Turf

Not All Turfs Are Created Equal

Last month, my football group booked a turf in south Bangalore for our weekly game. The listing looked great — photos showed a clean green surface, proper goals, floodlights. Reality? The surface had bald patches, one goal had no net, and the "floodlights" were basically two tube lights. We played the full hour because we'd already paid. But it wasn't fun.

That experience taught me something: choosing where you play matters almost as much as who you play with. A good turf elevates your game. A bad one ruins it.

Here's everything I've learned about picking the right venue.

Understand the Surface Types

Artificial grass (AG). This is the most common surface for football and cricket turfs in India. Quality varies wildly. Good AG surfaces have proper infill (rubber granules or sand between the fibres), consistent pile height, and adequate cushioning. Cheap ones feel like playing on a green carpet over concrete.

Natural grass. Rare for hourly bookings, but some premium venues maintain real grass pitches. Amazing to play on, but weather-dependent. After monsoon rains in Mumbai or Kolkata, natural grass turfs can become mudslides.

Synthetic courts. For badminton, basketball, and futsal, you'll encounter synthetic or wooden surfaces. Wooden courts are ideal for badminton. Synthetic works well for futsal. Make sure the surface isn't slippery — especially important for indoor venues with poor ventilation where sweat and humidity accumulate.

What to Check Before Booking

Photos vs reality. Look for recent reviews and photos from other players. Most booking apps show user reviews — read them. On Turf Scout, I always check the ratings and recent comments before booking a new venue.

Amenities. Basics matter: drinking water, washrooms, changing rooms, parking. You'd be surprised how many turfs in Indian cities don't have proper washrooms. If you're paying good money per hour, these shouldn't be optional.

Floodlight quality. If you're playing evening or night slots (which most working professionals do), lighting is critical. Poor lighting creates shadows on the playing surface, making it hard to track the ball. Ask about the lux level or just check if existing players have mentioned lighting in reviews.

Size of the playing area. "Football turf" could mean anything from a legit 5-a-side court to a cramped rectangle where six players can barely move. Check the dimensions. For 5-a-side football, you want at least 25m x 15m. For 7-a-side, 50m x 30m minimum.

Pricing — What's Fair?

Turf pricing in India varies by city, time slot, and surface quality.

Budget range (₹500-₹800/hour): Older facilities, basic amenities, might have surface wear. Fine for casual games among friends.

Mid-range (₹800-₹1500/hour): Good quality surface, proper lighting, decent amenities. This is the sweet spot for most regular players.

Premium (₹1500-₹3000/hour): Top-tier surfaces, climate-controlled indoor venues, premium amenities. Worth it for competitive games or corporate events.

Peak vs off-peak: Evening slots (6-10 PM) are usually 30-50% more expensive than morning or afternoon slots. If you can play on weekend mornings, you'll save significant money and the turfs are less crowded.

Indoor vs Outdoor

This depends on your sport and your city's weather.

Indoor pros: Weather-proof, consistent lighting, no sun exposure. Great for badminton, futsal, and basketball. Essential during monsoon season.

Indoor cons: Can get stuffy. Sound echoes. Usually more expensive per hour.

Outdoor pros: More space, natural air, better for football and cricket. Feels more like "real" sport.

Outdoor cons: Weather-dependent. Bangalore rain can cancel your booking in seconds. Delhi winter fog makes evening games impossible. Mumbai humidity drains you twice as fast.

Booking Tips That Save Money and Hassle

Book in advance. Popular turfs in cities like Pune and Bangalore fill up fast, especially weekend evening slots. Book 2-3 days ahead. Most venues on Turf Scout show real-time availability, so you can grab slots the moment they open.

Become a regular. Many turfs offer loyalty discounts or monthly packages for teams that book weekly. Ask about these — the hourly rate drops significantly.

Split costs properly. If you're booking a 5-a-side turf for ₹1200/hour and playing with 10 people, that's ₹120 per person. Use a proper split calculator or UPI to collect before the game. Chasing payments after the match is the worst.

Check cancellation policy. Life happens. Before booking, understand the venue's cancellation and refund terms. Some offer full refunds up to 24 hours before, others don't refund at all.

The right turf makes every game better. Take ten minutes to research before you book — your knees, your wallet, and your team will thank you.
